Bilingual apprenticeships in practice

The appeal of bilingual apprenticeships is that they can be tailored to the linguistic needs of the organisation and the apprentice.

You can see how this could work in practice in the case study below:

Case Study

Meithrinfa Mes Bychain is a childcare provider. As well as the incidental Welsh that they use every day in the nursery, a few of the parents and children speak Welsh either as a first language or as learners. As an inclusive employer, Mes Bychain actively encourages all apprentices to complete their apprenticeships bilingually.

Nadia is a childcare worker who has just started with the company. She attended an English medium school but enjoyed her Welsh lessons and achieved a B in her Welsh language GCSE. Nadia is completing her Level 2 childcare Practice qualification and wants to use more Welsh in her work.

After discussing with her manager and tutor, Nadia has decided to do some of her written tasks in Welsh. She has also decided that it would be useful to complete her Communication Essential Skills qualification in Welsh too.

Rhys also works in the Nursery. He is an assistant manager and is completing his level 4 in Professional Practice in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development. Rhys attended Welsh school and, after discussing with his manager and tutor, has decided to complete all his assessments through the medium of Welsh as well as Essential Skills in Application of Number and Digital Literacy. Rhys has decided that he would like to complete his Communication essential skill qualification in English to improve his written English skills.
